1/2 pound of mixed pink, oyster, and lion's mane mushrooms from Holiday Lake Mushroom Farm.
Holiday Lake Mushrooms is a small local business owned and operated by Rob Adams in Sanford North Carolina. Rob was in building material sales since 1989. He started in Cherry Hill NJ and the company he worked for, ProBuild, moved him to North Carolina in 2007 to expand sales in Raleigh. He became one of the top producers with that company and in 2018 was approached by Kempsville Building Material out of Virginia to help start a new full scale lumberyard and truss facility in Sanford.
Rob and his wife Susan helped staff and start the yard in May 2018 and in 2021 the facility did 56 million in sales and had 102 employees. The yard was the quickest new facility to profitability in the company’s history. (Kempsville is part of the Carter Lumber group and has been in business since 1932.)
Rob and Susan needed to move closer to the yard and found a beautiful lot in Westlake Valley in Sanford in 2008 and built their 3rd custom home on the site. The lake is called Holiday Lake which is where the company name came from.
As successful as the lumberyard became, the stress of the building business and the problems the Covid crisis caused had Rob looking to make a career change. Rob is an avid gardener and had an interest in mushrooms. Growing mushrooms started as a hobby and in 2022 and became an obsession. He was not happy in the building business and was re-evaluating life. The goal was to make a living doing something he loved and was passionate about. After many months of research he left Kempsville and the building industry to start Holiday Lake Mushrooms.
The farm produces several strains of oyster mushrooms as well as Lions Mane, Chestnut, Kings, and is expanding into growing Shiitake. The farm will add new strains that will be grown seasonally. The farm uses bag technology and only uses biodegradable bags. We are very concerned about our environment and want to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible. We recycle packaging and reduce waste as much as possible. We currently supply several restaurants, a vegan food truck and a local co-op in Apex who supplies fresh local food to people in the area. We also sell dried Reshi and Lions mane as well as ready to fruit blocks for folks that want to grow mushrooms at home.
We hope to grow HKM but will keep the company small enough to provide the best service and quality. We are proud of what we grow and the relationships we have.
